Heavy Rain Likely

Name and classification

Heavy rain likely is a Yolia weather alert, classified as an outdoor climate risk and based on forecast. It combines the expected volume of precipitation with the probability of its occurrence, and does not describe a plant physiological process.

What is it

It is a warning that heavy rain is expected with a reasonable probability of occurring. Two different pieces of information come into play: how much water is forecast and how confident the forecast is. A high volume with a low probability says little, as does a high probability with light rain.

Where and how it was studied

It is studied in meteorology and agricultural hydrology. Forecasts are generated with numerical models that simulate the atmosphere, and the probability of precipitation expresses the uncertainty of those models. They are verified by comparing what is predicted with rain gauges and radar.

Why it matters for cultivation

Heavy rain can erode the soil, waterlog roots, wash away nutrients, damage leaves and fruits, and promote diseases. Knowing in advance allows you to think about drainage, protection and work scheduling, although the final decision depends on the terrain and the crop.

Physics — how it works

Heavy precipitation occurs when a mass of warm, moist air rises and cools, condensing a lot of vapor in a short time. If the intensity of the rain exceeds the speed with which the soil absorbs water, the excess runs along the surface and drags particles.

Mechanism of action

The impact of the drops breaks up soil aggregates and forms crusts that reduce infiltration. The accumulated water displaces the air from the pores and the roots are left with little oxygen. Additionally, splashes carry spores and bacteria from the soil to the lower leaves.

Where it occurs in the plant

It acts on the aerial part, by hitting and wetting the foliage, flowers and fruits, and on the soil and root zone by saturation and runoff. Sloping land suffers erosion, and low or compacted areas suffer more waterlogging.

How it is regulated

The plant does not control rainfall, but management can modulate its effect with drainage, soil cover, soil structure and physical protections. Infiltration depends on texture, organic matter and compaction, which determine how much water the soil tolerates without damage.

What triggers/affects it

It depends on the season, storm fronts and systems, relief and previous soil moisture. An already saturated soil responds worse to heavy rain than a dry one. The uncertainty of the forecast increases the further out the deadline.

What other processes does it interact with?

It interacts with the risk of fungal diseases, drainage, wind, temperature and scheduled irrigation, which should be reconsidered if rain is expected. It is also related to phenology, because flowering and fruit set are stages that are especially sensitive to water and shock.

Relevant differences between species in the catalog

Tolerance varies greatly. Crops with delicate fruits or open flowers suffer more from shock and excess humidity, and species sensitive to waterlogging do not tolerate saturation. Some species from humid climates resist better. It is advisable to review each species in the catalog.

How it is observed in practice

It is observed with a rain gauge, with records from nearby stations and with the local forecast. After the rain, persistent puddles, soil drift, bruised leaves and cracked fruits are checked. Comparing what is predicted with what is measured helps judge how reliable the source is.

What happens if there is excess

A strong storm can cause root suffocation, erosion, lodging, falling flowers and fruits, cracks in fruits and outbreaks of rot. Damage depends on intensity, duration, drainage and crop stage, and does not always appear immediately.

How Yolia Uses It

Yolia activates the alert when 10 mm or more is expected and the probability is at least 60%. If the probability data is missing, it is activated only by the volume. Does not apply in indoor mode. The mark with medium confidence because it is based on a forecast and not on a measurement that has already occurred.

Common interpretation errors

A mistake is reading the probability as intensity: 60% does not mean moderate rain, but the possibility of it occurring. Another is to treat the warning as certainty. It is also forgotten that the same volume causes different damage depending on the soil, the slope and the stage of cultivation.

Evidence and limits of current knowledge

Forecasts a few days ahead are reasonably useful, but the exact location and time of a local storm is difficult to predict. The probability of rain has different technical interpretations depending on the source, and the specific volume may differ from what falls on your plot.
